Hello everyone! Welcome back to Couple’s Checklist! Today I want to share with you guys how I prepare and study for my finals. Finals week is approaching slowly. The biggest takeaway for finals week is to study and prepare in advance. Cramming for finals- or any test in general is super stressful. To avoid that, I will provide you guys with how I prepare. The biggest thing for finals week is to prepare at least two weeks in advance. I always try to gather all of my notes/ previous study guides together and revise the material. If I have a study guide outline that my professor gave me, it’ll help me make my study guide. Trying to get everything from the semester like quizzes, exams, past assignments, study guides from previous exams, and notes is so important.
Build your Study Guide!
Now that you have as much material as possible, it is time to make your study guide! I’m a very visual learner, so I need colorful material to make studying easier for me. I also get bored easily, so the colorful, visually appealing notes is important. Basically, I go through my study guide outline that my professor gave me or my material over the whole semester and begin to make my study guide. I make sure I have colorful pens, highlighters, etc. I try to be as thorough as possible so this might be a bit time consuming, hence why you do this at least two weeks in advance.
Once your study guide is finished, it is time to begin studying. I try to dedicate a few hours each day to studying the material. Studying for a few hours a day a week or two before a final is so important, especially if you have other finals. Finals week can be stressful but following these steps and being prepared can prevent you from being so stressed. Find a nice quiet spot and dial in for a few hours. What makes it less intimidating for me is setting a timer on my phone for about 45 minutes at a time and dividing my studying like that. I am a strong believer in taking frequent study breaks. If you get overwhelmed, why bother forcing yourself to study? It won’t get you anywhere. The best way to avoid that is to take a short study break every 45 minutes to an hour.
The best way to know if you know the material is to quiz yourself. Usually, I go through each chapter and make up pretend quiz questions on a word document. Being able to do this is so crucial for ensuring that you are comfortable with the material. In my experiences, when I have done this, I have gotten much better grades on exams compared to when I haven’t done this trick. It really works for me and I think it could work for others as well! Exam season is super stressful and intimidating but doing the right steps can help ease that stress.
Have Time to Yourself
This is the most important step. Do this the day before your exam. Once you have studied as much as you can, it’s time to relax. I dedicate the day before my exam for some self-care. I like to get my hair or nails done, have a movie day, do a facemask, take a bath, or drink a glass of wine. Being able to unwind after studying is so important. It’s important to reward yourself with little things like this before a big exam.
