Planet Fitness…. Worth it or forget it?

Hey everyone! It’s Kayla! I hope you all are having an amazing day so far:) So as you all probably know, I am really into fitness. I have been going to Planet Fitness for quite some time now and I think it is only right to share my opinion about it!

I will start with the positives first. I absolutely love how affordable it is! It is 23 dollars a month for a Black Card Membership. That membership is the best one offered and has a lot of cool perks such as unlimited use for their Black Card spa. Basically their Black Card spa is just massage chairs, hydromassage beds, the red light therapy bed, as well as tanning beds. I took full advantage of this and would use the hydromassage beds, red light beds, and tanning beds very often.

Another positive is the locker room. I love going into a gym and having a place to lock my gym stuff up in. I absolutely hate putting my stuff in cubbies for everyone to see because I’m so paranoid and I think that people will take my stuff. It’s also super cool how there’s many showers and changing rooms. Most times when I would go to Planet Fitness, I would go right before work/school or right after work/school so it’s pretty awesome how I can get ready for my workout or for the day with no hassles.

The gym setup is pretty awesome as well. There’s a cardio section, a stretching room, a 30 minute workout room and a weights section. I like how everything is divided and spaced out because it makes it easier to workout in peace. I also really like how there truly is no wait for equipment, I hate going to the gym and having to wait for someone to get done in order for me to use it. I am very impatient, so I like to go into the gym and walk out in an efficient manner!

Time for the negatives… First, I hate how the Planet Fitnesses around me are open 24 hours 5 days a week. I wish they were open 24/7. I work in retail, which means I work mostly every weekend. It is really tough to plan out a workout when my windows to workout at Planet Fitness are 7 AM to 7 PM. I found myself skipping the gym on weekends more often which led me to slack off.

Another thing I didn’t like was the fact that there were little to no mirrors in each facility. It made it very hard for me to take progress pictures or even view myself while I was doing an exercise to evaluate if I had the right form or not. I am a very visual person, if I can’t see what I’m doing, I have a very hard time concentrating.

Next, I hated how there was a dress code. It wasn’t strict at all but I felt that I would get yelled at if I were to workout in a sports bra and a pair of leggings. Granted, I was never yelled at but they have a sign posted in their locker rooms telling us what we can and can’t wear. Another thing that joins hand in hand with this would be the Lunk Alarm. Some people love it and some people hate it; I on the other hand HATE it. They set off an alarm if someone is slamming weights or yelling while lifting. I understand that they want to protect the facility and not make everyone else uncomfortable, but I don’t think it’s fair to target one person trying to better themselves just like everyone else in the gym. Now, that is my opinion, some people think otherwise and that is totally fine!

The last thing I do not like is that cancelling my membership is a hassle. I cannot call or do it through their app; I have to physically go into the facility and fill out paperwork or I have to submit a letter and mail it to them. I am a very busy person and it makes it so much harder to cancel my membership if I have to go the extra mile to cancel my membership. Recently, I moved back home and the closest Planet Fitness is about 20 minutes away from my house. It isn’t a bad drive at all but I would much rather go to a gym 5 minutes away than go to a gym that’s 20 minutes away.

In conclusion, I think Planet Fitness is a really cool gym. I 100% would go back there again if it was near my house. It is super budget friendly and the staff there are insanely nice. The negatives aren’t overpowering my opinion of the facility itself. As long as I can go workout without being bothered, that’s all I care about! If you guys want to see more reviews about other gyms, workout plans, etc. Please please please let me know! Have a great night everyone:)

Yours Truly, Kayla

  1. I have to agree with you. it is really a good gym for the money. Yes, there are annoyances like the dress code and the Lunk Alarm which singles people out who are just trying to better themselves. I like to push myself hard, but I’m not all about yelling, grunting, and dropping weights. I just started, but I think it is worth it so far. My daughter and I are doing the Express 30 Circuit and throwing in an extra day or two if we find time.
