Top 5 things you didn’t know about New Jersey

New Jersey is most certainly an interesting state for the most parts. You can find densely wooded forests or a long coastline of some of the best beaches on the east coast. The New York City skyline overlooks the state from miles and miles away. I have lived in New Jersey for my entire 23 years of existence in the great place that we call the “Garden State”. Here are some of my top 5 weird things that you didn’t know about our state.

#1: We pump our own gas…

Ah yes, one of our states laziest traits that we have. I’m not too sure how many states have gas attendants at the gas stations, but when I have to pump my gas when in New York, I am baffled. Us Jersey people are so used to having someone fill up our gas tank which is a benefit to living in New Jersey. Although some might call me crazy for this, but I actually do enjoy pumping my own gas rather than having it done for me…

#2: New Jersey has an internal battle whether it is called Taylor Ham or Pork Roll

This one is definitely my favorites as there is a noticeable divide between North and South Jersey. The famous meat that typically goes on your breakfast sandwich is always on the debate platform. Typically, people from North Jersey call it Taylor Ham (me) and people from South Jersey call it Pork Roll. Personally, I don’t think this debate will ever end and I hope it doesn’t either. It makes this state so unique that we debate over little things like this “issue”.

#3: The beach is called “the shore”

I don’t think many foreigners would understand this term as typically if we are explaining that we are heading to the beach, we would say, “going down the shore”. Another unique saying that we have taken a grasp on as it probably would be easier to call it the beach, but that is too basic for us. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I am sure that the infamous show, “Jersey Shore” ignited the famous term on what we call our beaches. If you live in New Jersey or just moved here, start to get familiar with calling it the shore or we will have some problems!

#4: We consider our state separated into two parts; North and South Jersey

Yes, we argue and have a divide amongst our state. Are you surprised? If you were wondering why haven’t I mentioned Central Jersey, it’s because we don’t really recognize that area. Central Jersey is kind of a wasteland stuck in between two popular spots in the state. North Jersey is known for its mountains and forests along with being right next to New York City while South Jersey is known for the beach… basically. With that being said, North Jersey is the best and will always rule the state! 🙂

#5: “New York City’s” football teams are actually located in New Jersey

When you’re watching the New York Giants or the New York Jets during football season, just remember that these teams actually reside and play in New Jersey. Both of them share a stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey with the practice facilities also being located in New Jersey. I get it though, the New York instead of the New Jersey is better for a team within their name due to the popularity of the city across the river. I won’t complain I guess because it makes it a lot easier for me to go to a Giants game in New Jersey than it would be in New York!

Well, there you have it. There are so many more “interesting facts” that New Jersey has to share, but these were my top 5 and they really do make this small state on the east coast interesting.

Feel free to comment on your experiences with New Jersey or interesting facts that you may have with your own state!
